Student received a scholarship of 15K, and the remainder of tuition/room/board for the spring semester (20K) was paid out of 529 funds. If the student received a cash grant (Covid related) of $1500, how should that $1500 be treated? It effectively was a cash refund off the 20K which was paid by 529 funds. Should this $1500 be reported anywhere?
Great question! I’ll ask it today but will also answer you right now: You should redeposit it into the 529. Just call the plan and ask how to do it, i.e. if you need to do anything specific beyond making a deposit of $1500.
Can my child use our 529 funds to go to school in Scotland?
My apologies, I didn’t see this during the webinar. You can use your 529 at many international schools. Any school that participates in the US’ federal student aid programs is eligible for 529 uses. You can find more details and a searchable database here: https://studentaid.gov/resources/prepare-for-college/students/choosing-schools
